Arts & Crafts

"Creativity is the use of imagination or original ideas to create something" - Oxford Dictionary http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/

It is good to know the difference between Art and Craft as it gives you a little bit more of an idea of what skills a child may be building when doing art activities vs. craft activities - particularly if you are trying to practice and build certain skills.

Art activities don't have any instruction and are about creating as you see fit, it is open ended (you decide when it is finished or still needs work) and often has no particular goal to start with.  Children experiment with different was to use textures, materials and tools that allows self expression and exploring feelings.
Craft activities usually involve instructions on how to complete them, there is a beginning and an end to the project and there is a goal that is set before you start (e.g. make a crown).  Children learn patience, goal setting, exploring three dimensional structures, require use of specific tools and materials to achieve a specific response (e.g. you need to put a dot of glue on the back of a jewel).

Arts & Crafts help to develop thinking & problem solving skills, emotional skills, communication skills and also fine motor skills.
