About OMY Design & Play

OMY Design & Play is a cheerful and creative line of products created by two designers Elvira Laurent and Marie-Cerise Lichtlé in Paris.  They wanted to create a range of products that were joyful, smart and graphic designs for the house that can be used by all ages.

Elvira Laurent and Marie-Cerise Lichtlé are graphic artists and illustrators who graduated from the Arts Deco of Paris and after creating their own graphic arts studio in 2005, they combined their enthusiasm and experience to form OMY Design & Play in 2012.

All of the products are designed in France in their workshops and are then manufactured in France or in Europe according to CE standards.  They are also conscious of their impact on the environment, so carefully select materials (ink and paper) to maintain respect for the environment, while maintaining a good quality product.

What we love most about this range is the unique designs and gigantic proportions of colouring space that will entice people of all ages to join in.  It fosters team work and inclusion of all family members - it doesn’t mater if you colour outside the lines, it just adds to the quirkiness of the final product!  It also introduces children to the idea of a longer term project that takes time, goal setting and a little bit of patience to create the final piece of artwork.

Development of Skills

(please see tab below for icon key)

The OMY range of colouring in posters, rolls and placemats helps build a variety of skills:

  • Fine Motor skills:  children need the use of precise hand and eye coordination to colour between the lines (although it is also fun to colour outside the lines).  Colouring in also helps build up strength in the muscles that are required for writing.
  • Communication skills:  the enormous size of these posters encourages other people to join in and help to finish a rather large project.  This can stimulate communication in many forms - verbal communication to work out who is going to colour what, setting boundaries and also non verbal communication in the form of expression with drawing.
  • Emotional development:  although pre defined pictures for colouring in limits complete freedom of expression, it does still allow children to express their thoughts and feelings in the way they approach the use of colour (colouring in people in an abstract way).  The quirkiness of the graphics also helps to communicate that it is ok to draw things abstractly, to be different from the normal crowd of cartoon designs.  Completion of such a large task helps build confidence in children, which improves mental health.
  • Thinking & Problem solving skills:  children are encouraged to use their imagination when approaching these colouring in pages, to experiment with colour, explore new cities and magical lands.  Some of the pages also include puzzles to get children thinking and problem solving (e.g. Tic tac toe, dot to dot, mazes).  You will also need to help them start building skills around goal setting to help tackle such a large projects and complete the final project - this involves a little bit of practice of their patience.

It is important that younger children are still given the opportunity to explore drawing and colouring in an environment that doesn’t provide boundaries or limits on their imagination (e.g. free drawing, creating their own designs) to truly express and develop their artistic skills.

*This information is provided for help with normal development and safety measures should always be taken to ensure children are playing with age appropriate toys (e.g. don't let a small child who is likely to swallow toys to play with an item that carries the Not for under 3 icon).
