About Miller Goodman

Miller Goodman Logo

There are so many wonderful things to say about Miller Goodman, but what caught our eyes are their innovative toys which not only look beautiful but function so well for open-ended play.

Zoe Miller and David Goodman are based in Brighton, England and are driven to nurture the imagination through the art of play.  They combine beautiful and original design with creative and abstract ideas to produce simple shapes with undefined forms and patterns that encourage children to explore and play with their toys in a limitless manner.  There is no right or wrong way to play with a Miller Goodman toy - the limit is just your child's imagination.

The duo is also socially and environmentally considerate, which we value highly here at Wild & Whimsical Things.  The wood used for all of the toys are rubberwood, which is an ecological hardwood and they use non-toxic, child safe inks on all of the range.  The toys have been tested and conform to U.S ASTM and European EN71 standards.

The range by Miller Goodman will provide children with a wide range of skills and become toys that will be treasured and passed on through generations.  We are big believers of quality over quantity - to buy more purposeful toys that can be played in a wide variety of ways, across age groups and last a lifetime and Miller Goodman fit this description perfectly.

Development of Skills

Fine Motor skills  Communication skills  Thinking & Problems solving skills

(please see tab below for icon key)

The Miller Goodman range helps build a variety of skills including:

  • Fine Motor skills:  While children are engaging in play with the different shapes, they require different amounts of grip strength and movements of the fingers as well as coordinating these movements with what the eyes are seeing to place them in the desired way - stacking them, placing them to the left or right of another block or tilting it on an angle.
  • Communication skills:  Imaginative play helps to build communication skills, particularly when others join in (e.g. turn taking, listening to friends stories/instructions of the game).  The whole range encourages lots of people to get involved and create whatever the mind can come up with.  Take the opportunity to work together and focus on the different ways you can practice communicating - hand gestures, descriptions and the words you use in these descriptions, waiting for the other person to finish their turn.
  • Thinking & Problems solving skills:  involving children in imaginative and creative play stimulates their minds and encourages them to think without restrictions.  Putting together the limitless combinations of blocks requires practising spatial recognition.  Spatial recognition is when you recognise where objects are in relation to yourself (distance, to the right, to the left, up, down etc.) as well as the orientation of an object and its relationship to other objects (in a house, on a house, outside of the house, in the room on the left, upside down etc.).  These skills are important for other skills such as sports, building, crafting which all require a knowledge of your body position and orientation of other objects.  The blocks can be used like a puzzle and follow along on the suggested combinations, which requires thought and processing of lots of information.  Creating your own combination expands this even more.
