About

Milton Ashby Logo

Milton Ashby was started when the founder, Shannon Ley was on the hunt for a stylish, beautiful and great quality toy to give as a gift to a friend’s son and struggled to find something he was proud of.  So in 2014, Shannon decided to start making his own fabulous toys.

Shannon has a background in Aerospace Engineering - he worked as an automotive engineer for 7 years, but due to the decline in manufacturing cars in Australia, Shannon decided to start a small business instead.  He makes all of these toys in his workshop in Melbourne, Australia, so we are pretty proud of having these toys on board at Wild & Whimsical Things so we can help support local talent.

All of Milton Ashby toys are made from high quality materials with the aim of making stylish, strong, safe and unique gifts for children.  They are made entirely from the finest timbers, coated in 100% natural oils and come in the most beautiful packaging that can be reused again and again to store little treasures or be used in craft activities (just to name a few ideas).

Milton Ashby is our first line of wooden toys and the reason for this is because we have been really picky about what toys we want to sell in our shop.  We look for top quality toys that will last beyond your child’s play years to be passed on to another to enjoy or display as a reminder of those childhood years.  We also value local made products and those that are made from safe materials and hope that you enjoy this range as much as we do.

Development of Skills

Fine Motor skills  Gross Motor skills  Sensory Skills icon  Emotional Skills icon  Thinking & Problem Solving skills icon (please see tab below for icon key)

The Milton Ashby Range help to build a variety of skills including:

  • Fine motor skills:  the vehicles and teether/rattles are great for encouraging the development of fine motor skills - hands and fingers need to coordinate movement to push and pull the cars, truck and plane around.  The moveable propellers and wheels on the vehicles encourage little fingers to investigate how they move.  The beads on the rattles encourage little fingers to explore and the entire rattle is designed for mouths to explore.  Bringing toys to the mouth to explore is a very important developmental milestone as the mouth is highly sensitive and children need to be exposed to a variety of textures to continue building on their sensory processing skills.
  • Gross motor skills:  moving and rolling the vehicles around encourages babies to move along with it, whether that be using reaching from a sitting position, on their tummy, commando crawling, crawling, walking or running.  The truck also has some little blocks to help stack on the back.
  • Sensory skills:  the texture of wood is a great sensory experience which feels quite different to the common plastic and soft toys that babies are often given as gifts.  The toys come in a range of bright colours to help stimulate the visual system and the rattles make a great little noise when shaken.  This sensory experience encourages babies to continue to shake the rattle and this helps to build up fine motor skills.  The hard surface of the wood is great for little gums to feel and gnaw on.
  • Emotional skills:  toys that encourage imaginative play help to build emotional skills.  Imaginative play is important for children to engage in, it provides a way that children can process the information around them and interpret it in their own way.  It is an unrestricted way to play and imaginative play doesn’t contain any rules or regulations, so children feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings within this environment.
  • Thinking & Problem solving:  imaginative play requires thinking and problem solving skills to imagine and create worlds around them and utilise different materials to create these worlds.  Playing with vehicles and building blocks on the truck requires understanding spatial awareness - recognising where objects are in space and where they are in relation to your body.  This term also describes the ability to know where your own body parts are in space and where they are in relation to your other body parts - this is essential to move in a coordinated way.  Children who are good at building and have good hand-eye coordination generally have good spatial awareness and are often good with developing skilled sporting activities or building complex buildings from different materials.  They have a good understanding of on/off, under/on, left/right, how quickly/slowly objects are moving.
