About Sarah's Silks

Sarah's Silks Logo

When I was developing our wishlist of imaginative play toys, Sarah's Silks were high on the 'must have' list.

Sarah's Silks believe in the power of imaginative play and make really simple, but beautiful toys that can inspire so many types of pretend play.  They can be used as dress ups, forts, puppet shows, peek-a-boo for younger children and play scenes just to name a few.

Sarah's Silks are a family owned company and they are inspired by the Waldorf educational values that emphasize the role of imagination in learning and open-ended play.  Sarah's Silks values sustainability and supporting the families who help produce these beautiful toys.  The silks are woven, dyed and hand-hemmed in China where the seamstresses work from their home and are paid a fair wage as well as access to health insurance.

Silk is a natural fibre and a renewable resource, the dyes are all non-toxic, non-hazardous, environmentally friendly with no heavy metals.  Sarah's Silks have been given a "Green America Approved Business" to recognised their efforts to create sustainable toys.

Sarah's Silks are beautiful for the senses with their beautiful colours and luxurious feel of the soft and silky material and children will develop so many creative games with this open-ended range of toys.  We love pairing this range with the Grimm's Spiel & Holz range of wooden toys as they are a match made in heaven for open-ended play.

Development of Skills

Gross Motor Skills Sensory skills Emotional skills Communication skills Thinking & Problems solving skills

The Sarah's Silks range helps to build a variety of skills including:

    • Gross Motor Skills:  Many items from the Sarah's Silks range encourages movement.  The floating, soft silks are begging to flap in the breeze as your child pretends they are a superhero, twirling in the air as your ballerina spins around with their silk tied as a skirt.  There are also some wand streamers, soft swords and comet style silk and ball which all encourage some beautiful big arm movements which help children practice their coordination, build up strength around their shoulder and work on their proprioception (a special sensation in your joints that works out where you arm is relative to other objects and your body).
    • Sensory Skills:  The Sarah Silk's are made from silk - a beautiful material to touch and feel and they come in lovely bright colours.  Young children will love the feel of these silks and expose children to a wide variety of textures helps enhance their processing of sensations and helps to reduce sensory aversion (this is where children become quite particular about the touch and feel of objects/things and avoid/have a strong dislike for certain textures - e.g. sand, sticky or messy food)
    • Emotional Skills:  imaginative play taps into emotions and feelings and allows children (and adults) to express themselves without placing restrictions on their thoughts.  There is no right or wrong way for the brain to imagine.  The mini and regular sized knit dolls also make beautiful comfort friends, which helps to provide a sense of security in unfamiliar situations and allows children to adapt to these unfamiliar environments more quickly.
    • Communication Skills:  While engaging in imaginative play, children explore a variety of communication - talking to the pretend friends and practising words and sentence structure, facial expressions as well as hand and arm gestures to non verbally communicate.  When friends and family join in with the games, this further encourages communication including following instructions, giving instructions and taking turns.
    • Thinking & Problem-Solving Skills:  Engaging in any open-ended imaginative play games requires quite complex thinking.  Children get to explore ideas and test them out, see what works and what they have to modify.  Watch a child try and build a fort themselves - they need to problem solve how they are going to secure the silk and they might try a few scenarios before finding a successful one.  They might even discover a way that we wouldn't conventionally use, but something that still works.  This is how new discoveries are made.  Giving children the freedom and space to engage in this sort of play allows them to problem solve these ideas themselves, which enhances the brain pathways to be able to repeat the successful process again, or know what ones didn't work and hopefully avoid these again.
